Hej alle sammen,
A ski resort, elephants, fleas, round churches and Krølle Bølle. Bornholm has it all. Bornholm is a beautiful island in the middle of the Baltic sea with tho most sun hours of northern Europe. A true cyclist paradise according to the brochures. We think that is more or less correct, but you don't get much cycling done. There so much to see and to do. We visited four round medieval churches, walked through rough nature area near Hammeren where we visited the big ruin Hammerhus. Descended from the Helligdomsklipperne, visited the glass-works Baltic Sea Glass ( thanks Frank, for the tip!), crossed the sea to the most eastern part of Denmark: the islands Christansø and Frederiksø. Bornholm isn't only great in the summer, but also in the winter. For that reason a farmer on Bornholm setup a ski lift, subsidized by the EU to make better use of the large hill on his land. At first (and still) people were skeptic about the project. How can you subsidize a ski lift in 'the Mallorca of the north'? But it still was open four months in the winter of 2012 - 2013. So here a warm recommendation for the ski lovers among you! We were camping out in the garden of the farmer and one morning we woke up with fleas in our tent. Oops.... After a thorough beating and a dive in the sea, we got rid of them.
Krølle Bølle is a troll and lives in Langebjerg, in the north of Bornholm, close to the ruin Hammerhus. It was around the WOII that that the Danish Ludvig Mahler created for his son Ole. These days Krølle Bølle is the mascot for Bornholm.
We're waiting now for the ferry to Ystad in Sweden. We'll cycle along the coast to Malmö, and cross the bridge by train to Copenhagen. The weather is still great. We did get a little rain, but that was not enough to clear the dust off our bikes.
Ah, yes, those elephants. There was a traveling circus next to the camping where we stayed the night.
